Expectations

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.” – 1 Corinthians 13:4, NIV

Jane had a heartfelt goal: to regain her health and energy after the birth of their third son. Her husband, Aaron, lovingly joined her on the journey. Every morning, they drove to the gym together, sharing their workouts as partners in fitness and life.

But mornings were hard for Jane. She wasn’t much of a morning person, and her quiet demeanor often left Aaron guessing. In his mind, her silence suggested dissatisfaction. Concerned, Aaron offered to be someone else’s gym buddy at a social event, thinking he was sparing Jane from an unspoken frustration.

Jane was stunned. What she saw as a bonding experience, Aaron misread entirely. Her emotions ranged from hurt to anger. Yet, she chose a path of patience. Waiting until they were alone, Jane gently voiced her feelings and gave Aaron the space to explain his perspective.

Aaron admitted his assumption, rooted in love but misguided by silence. Their conversation cleared the air, deepened their understanding, and strengthened their bond.

How often do we fall into the trap of unmet expectations? We carry assumptions in silence, missing the opportunity for deeper connection. But love calls us to be patient and humble, to open our hearts and ears to truly hear the ones we cherish.

Reflection:

  • Is there an expectation you’ve held onto in silence that might be worth discussing?

  • How can patience help you see beyond misunderstandings in your relationships?

Prayer:
God, when I’m hurt or burdened by my own expectations, grant me the grace to approach my loved ones with patience and love. Help me to hear the heart behind their words and speak with kindness. Teach me to nurture my relationships in the way You have nurtured me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Blessings, Pastor Stephan
